Death of a salesman, by Arthur Miller
Willy Loman has been working as a salesman all his life and he hardly knows how to do any other activity. Linda, his wife, is completely devoted to him, she admires him and she thinks that everything he does is well done. Biff and Happy are his sons and they are quite lazy, they do not study or work at all. Willy is going for his retirement and is always arguing with Biff and Happy. He feels that he is getting old day by day and he has not done anything important in his life but work.
I do not want to tell anymore about the piece of theatre entitled “Death of a Salesman”, by Arthur Miller. From my point of view this book is not as interesting as I thought when I borrowed it from the library. In fact I think that is an overrated work, but if anyone in the class is really interested in theatre, I can recommend it. It is certainly well-written and the descriptions of atmospheres are by far the best part of the book.

I respect your opinion, Silvia, but I'd really like to encourage people to read this book and to read theatre in general. The pace of the story is a bit slow, I know, but I still found it interesting, specially the way the story unfolds and how the characters are revealed little by little. There's a CD with the whole play to be listened to that might do wonders for your English, especially after reading the book. If you want to borrow it from the library, just let me know.
ReplyDeleteI agree Elena, reading theatre is a different and rewarding experience, and Arthur Miller is considered one of the great playwrights of all time (after Shakespeare I suppose!) I recommend also "A view from a bridge" and perhaps his most famous piece "The Crucible", which is all about the Salem Witch trials in America... very interesting!
ReplyDeleteGive him a chance, he was married to Marilyn Munroe for goodness sake - that makes him very very cool in my opinion! :D
