The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

The main character of the book The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is Ms Precious Ramostwe, a woman without fear of anything. She is the only female private detective in Bostwana, her village. Even though she is the lady in charge of the agency, this is not an agency which only takes care of ladies' problems.

Ms Precious Ramostwe lost her mother when she was just a child. Her father, Obed, and his cousin took care of her and gave her a good education. In spite of being a clever woman, she got involved with the wrong man, who, by the way, battered her and ended up leaving her when she was pregnant. She was unlucky with her baby because he died when he was only five days old. After all those misfortunes, she went to live with her father and looked after him until his death. After her father's death , Precious (or Ms Ramostwe, as she is called through most of the novel) inherited enough finantial resources to buy her own house and set up a detective agency, which is something people are not used to in Africa, above all if you are a woman.

Every case which comes into Ramostwe’s hands is solved. She manages to throw out a customer’s fake father who was ruining the woman’s life. On the other hand, she proves how unfaithful a customer’s husband is, how disobedient a daughter can be, how a cheeky devil an employer can be and a lot of things that you will have to discover reading this wonderful book.

I will just point out one more thing, Precious finally finds love but I really don’t know how things will turn out for her because I know there is a second part with a different name (Tears of the Giraffe), I hope it’s as good as the first one.
