Should men and women compete equally
in sports. Discuss.
Over the last few years much discussion about gender segregation in
sports has arisen. The aim of this essay is to determine whether segregation by
gender in sports is desirable or not. It cannot be argued that men and women,
generally speaking and on average, have different abilities, mainly just
because of biological reasons. Nevertheless, this biological predisposition can
be overcome and gender differences are suppressed or, at least, reduced; so,
what are the benefits and drawbacks of gender segregation in sports?
On one hand, segregation by gender in sports seems reasonable for those
sports in which gender matters a lot, thus offering women more chances to win.
Such sports are mainly those in which physical strength is involved; for
instance, athletics, swimming and cycling. Looking at the World Records in all
these fields by gender, they provide a clear proof of the importance of gender
in the results achieved.
On the other hand, the chance for men and women to compete alongside or
against each other would allow women to take part in more prestigious
competitions. There are, moreover, many sports in which the abilities of both
genders do not play a crucial role. Motor sports, shooting sports and horse
racing can be included among such sports. Remarkable examples of women
achieving good results while competing against men in motor sports are Laia
Sanz and Danica Patrick.
To sum up, I feel that each sport is different and should be thoroughly
analyzed. In those sports where physical strength can be overcome by other
abilities, segregation between women and men should be avoided as much as
possible.
