SHOULD SPORTS INVOLVING ANIMALS BE BANNED?
It is well
known that animals have been used in sports since ancient times. For example,
The Ancient Greeks and Romans used them during the Olympic Games. Since then,
humans have used animals in all kinds of sports, such as horse riding,
greyhound racing, horse racing and polo. The aim here is to discuss if sports
involving animals should be banned or not.
It is true
that, nowadays, there are many sports in which animals are used, and most
people accept it as normal. For instance, humans have used horses as means of
transport for many years, and current use of them in various sports is seen as
a normal activity. In
addition, people involved in these sports argue that the animals are well kept,
they do not suffer any harm, and what is more, these people claim that the
animals enjoy it when they compete. In the same way, animal sports
enthusiastics consider that the animals are doing what they do naturally:
horses and greyhounds love to run.
In contrast, animals,
like us, can feel fear, stress, exhaustion, and pain, and many people claim
that the use of animals for our own amusement is demeaning to ourselves as well
as to them; and critics also assume that animals in these situations are not
behaving naturally but rather doing things that they are trained to do.
In conclusion,
I believe that sports involving animals should not be banned, but the main
point that should be considered is that we have to ensure the welfare of these
animals during the competition, in other words, we need to strike a balance
between human pleasure and animal welfare.
