TECHNOLOGY: MATERIAL COMFORT? Do you remember those days in which when something went wrong with any of your appliances or devices a technician fixed it? Nowadays that is not bound to happen as the price of a brand new gadget is roughly the same as having it repaired. Technology is the main cause for our society having developed into an ephemeral one, with short-lived goods as well as relationships. It is true that technology has enhanced our lives in terms of saving time in the unbearable housework, my sister owns a vacuum cleaner that hoovers on its own! Moreover, technological advances related to communication have made most of us have equal opportunities to access to information and knowledge. However, the fast pace of technological advances has also brought lower prices, therefore, the standard and lifespan of products have been shortened. Furthermore, there has been a decrease in our salaries and purchasing power since some companies have placed their factories in countries where wages are lower. What is more, we have to cope with the ongoing increase in the amount of rubbish we get rid of, who does not want to replace their old mobile phone for the latest smartphone or a state-of-the-art tablet? My viewpoint is that although technology has made some tasks less tough, this is not synonymous with an easy life but with material comforts. In my opinion, easing our lives has more to do with relieving our minds. A.A.G
