FILM REVIEW
FILM REVIEW: THE EYE
“The Eye” is a 2008 supernatural horror movie which is set in Southern California and stars Jessica Alba as Sydney, an outstanding blind violinist, Parker Posey as Helen, Sydney’s older sister, and Alessandro Nivola as Paul, and eye doctor. This work is based on the 2002 Chinese movie of the same name.
As the film opens, we are introduced to the main character, Sydney, a blind woman since the age of 5 who undergoes a successful cornea transplant which enables her to see. However, after the surgery, Sydney begins seeing ghosts and experiencing terrifying visions that make her desperate to find the donor’s identity so as to unfold the mysteries behind those inherited traits.
Dreadfully directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud, the movie focuses on a new delusional mental illness as an explanation of Sydney’s recently acquired abilities. The script is monotonous and relies on loud music to scare the viewers. As Sydney, Jessica Alba is acceptable although, for me it is the character of Doctor Paul, played by Alessandro Nivola, who is the most confusing of all.
Overall, “The Eye” is a decent film but I do not recommend it to horror movie lovers that are looking for a chilling and petrifying supernatural story because it does not live up to it. My recommendation is to skip it and watch the Chinese one instead.
