Smoking addiction

BY P.C

If you see a warning notice on a board: “Danger, keep out”, your usual reaction is to leave the place as soon as it is possible. But, when smokers read or listen to this type of warning about smoking they do not pay any attention to it. Why do smokers smoke nonstop? The answers could be very different. If the smoker has begun smoking as a teenager, it could be only a game and when they know that it is a dangerous habit it might already be too late for them to stop. However, what kind of reasons could smokers use? Sometimes they explain that cigarettes allow them to calm down or even sleep better. What it is more, some smokers say that smoke helps them to breathe better.

After all, this is a lifestyle that smokers have chosen; in fact, smoking is the first activity in the morning, as their bodies are so used to nicotine that they demand an early intake. If they have a coffee, they need to smoke a cigarette as well, if they are stressed, or depressed, happy or sad. And if they want to practise some sport they could play parcheesi, as they are not able to get enough oxygen into their lungs. And, in addition, if the nicotine level drops dramatically and the smoker cannot light one cigarette after another, they will suffer from withdrawal symptoms.

In spite of all those problems, smokers can change this situation. But, not until they are aware of the problem will smoking addiction be solve. A useful suggestion would be to ask for help, it is really hard to be alone. It would be a good idea if they put in writing the reasons why they want to quit smoking. It could also help them if they get support; people whose friends or family help them achieve their aim. Finally, ex-smokers must always remember that they are addicted to cigarettes for the rest of his life in order not to smoke again.
