An Essay on Sports.
Read this essay written by one of your classmates as a good sample:
Should men and women compete equally in
sports?
Historically, gender segregation in sports has been considered entirely
natural. However, should this be acceptable nowadays in a society that seeks
equality between men and women in all fields?
Many people argue that due to physical differences, women cannot compete
with men in sports, and it is certainly true that in certain competitions which
require physical strength they would perform poorly and few would have a chance
to win. Moreover, this would be discouraging for female athletes, at the same
time increasing the difference in performance between men and women. It can
also be argued that sexual discrimination is not different from for example,
weight divisions in some sports, with the intention to make the results less
predictable.
On the other hand, some people feel the reason why females cannot
compete is due to facts like less women practising these sports and being less
encouraged. In many sports, skill, quickness of reactions or mental strength
are more important than raw power, and women have no disadvantages in these
respects. Finally, it is also clear that their progress in recent years suggest
they will eventually be competitive with male athletes.
All things considered, it seems to me that allowing men and women to
compete equally might lead in the short term to men dominating many
disciplines, but in the long term, owing to more incentives and opportunities
it would narrow the gap in the performance between sportsmen and sportswomen.
